Winter hats - need a recommendation

    Hey Gents,

I'm in the market for a new winter hat. I'm up in Minnesota so function really trumps form. I'm fine with the look of a regular stocking cap. I'd even be willing to shell out the $ for cashmere if it looks good enough. Any recommendations? For reference, I'm looking for something pretty simple. I wear a charcoal peacoat, knit wool scarf with brown, black, and charcoal in it, and the tweed backed leather gloves Joe has posted a couple times from Lands End.

    Thanks!

They're a little hard to find, but Dale of Norway's Fjord and Weatherproof hats are both great. Basically the best winter hats you can buy. The Fjord is more traditional in shape, while the Weatherproof is cut to wrap around your ears and the back of your head. Both have knit wool exteriors and wind-proof Gore Windstopper linings. A bit expensive at ~$60. The traditional Norwegian knitted design and tassels will always look good in Minne-snow-ta, IMO.

Finding a retailer is a bit of a pain since it's a foreign brand.

For something really cheap and basic but good quality, you could also go with a merino watch cap from Sierra Trading Post. I really like the one I bought last year. Made in the UK. Very warm and comfortable, though not windproof and water-resistant like the Dale hats. Much cheaper at ~$23, especially if you can use one of STP's many 20-30% codes.

I bought this cashmere hat a few weeks ago:

It was cheaper at one point, it's pretty good for the price. I've got a much thicker LL Bean hat as well, not cashmere, and a bit itchy, but warmer.
