In NYC I'm being quoted $38-50 to slim both arms and taper both sides (if two seams). How does it compare to your neighborhood tailor?

I just asked a tailor the same question the other day. I was quoted $25 a shirt. Thats in the detroit area. Im lucky though my mom does most of my alterations for free!

Here in Miami, it's about $15-20 from an in-store tailor, and I pay $12 total to my seamstress, who does an even better job.

Just picked up a cheap sewing machine, so hopefully it costs me $0 in the near future

(Should be nice considering I have about 30 shirts that could use hemming and slimming)

Depends on what she does. She basically rebuilt a shirt for me (cut the sleeves, cut the yoke, slimmed everything down, etc.) for ~$30. Just taking in the sides was $15 I believe.

Got a new sewing machine on the way as well. Save some money on the easy jobs and let the tailor do the real work.

$15 to take in the sides/raise armholes/slim sleeves a bit.
