@JDI - I like that tie. There is a lot of hate for TTB but my experience had been good and their ties match the quality of more expensive ties. Their knits leave something to be desired but others are great.

I can sort of understand it. Opens the same way as shirt and pants zipper, looks better

More visually pleasing line when the visible part of the buckle aligns with the shirt and the pant seam line - "gig line" in military parlance.

Women used to dress men for battle. Buttons and hooks were sewed on opposite of how they were on their own blouses so that when they were facing their man, it was the same as if they were looking down. This standard was then adopted by the British Army, and then eventually as a "standard rule" for how British men dress. It has since spread to be essentially universal--women's buttons and belts one way and men's the opposite.

I'm sure this legend jumps the track somewhere along the way similarly to the story of the space shuttle's rocket boosters being 4'8.5" because of chariots, but the basic premis of influence holds true. Plus, as JDI points out, your shirt buttons, zipper, and belt buckle all line up creating a nice, clean look. In today's military, it is referred to as a "gig line" (ie you could get a gig or demerit if it is out of line).
