I use these 7 inch Under Armor shorts. I hate really long shorts so These are great at 7 inches with useable pockets and non offensive colors https://www.underarmour.com/en-us/me...cid1289313-008

All shorts are casual in my opinion, and athletic wear is for, well...athletics. Try some Uniqlo chino shorts, which are plenty casual and I find them comfortable. Cheap and cheerful.

I love the Hylete shorts. I have a few pairs that I use for training and one pair that I wear with a tshirt for more casual settings (those are the one's with the pockets)...and I really like them. If you register for an account with them you will get a lot of offers

I like Lands End deck shorts - https://www.landsend.com/products/me...orts/id_322094.

They're not athletic shorts, but they're very comfortable (wide legs, drawstring waist), affordable, and wearable outside the house. I also don't think they look as old-manish in person as they are depicted on Lands End's website.

It's kind of insane that people pay $60 for shorts. If you just want something to wear around the house/while walking the dog, you can find gym shorts for around $10. I normally go with Champion myself.

I've gotten some comfortable, presentable shorts from Old Navy - it sounds like that might be what you're looking for?
