I'm convinced the big watch trend is driven 95% by the casualization of the American male wardrobe. Back when everyone wore shirtsleeves all the time, a slim watch was a necessity. Now that the majority of men can - and do - wear t-shirts all the time, there is no longer any practical constraint on the size of watches. Making small things smaller is hard; making them bigger is easy.

And then the small majority of us who do dress more formally/traditionally end up with goofy problems like this....
