New Dress Shoes: Meermin or Jack Erwin?

    Hello all.

I am in the market for some new black, cap toe oxfords. Trying to decide between Meermin and Jack Erwin. Price is similar, although Jack Erwin’s appear to be $20 or so more expensive.

Any thoughts or preferences? I honestly don’t know if there is a “better” choice since they both have been recommended by the main board.

For reference, I work in a very formal environment and wear a suit 5 days a week.

    Thanks for the tips.

I own a pair of Meermin and my brother in law has a pair of jack Erwin. The leather quality on the Meermin is easily superior but the break in time can be brutal. If you are willing to give them the time needed to break in and be comfortable, they are well worth it.

I'd rather have Meermin smooth leather than Jack Erwin smooth leather.

Which models are you looking at?

I'm going to skip the usual advice and NOT tell you that for about $50 more you can get a pair of AE shoes on sale.

Style-wise, I looked at the shoes at these links--are they they models you are looking at? I prefer the Meermin shoes as to style.

As far as price, unless you have a discount code for Meermin, it looks like they are within $10 of each other.

Like I said, I'll skip suggesting these AE shoes for just $55 more:

Because you're wearing suits five days a week, I'm assuming that you're wearing dress shoes five days a week as well. If so, I'm sure you've read the basic advice of NOT wearing the same shoes two days in a row. My experience is that shoes last so much longer when you switch them out.

So, if don't have another pair, and have the budget for it, do consider getting an additional pair of decent shoes when you can swing it.

Def get 2 pairs. Makes the shoes last 10x longer.

I'd recommend the Bartlett in brown and the hopkinson in merlot due to the sale.

These would be the only 2 shows youd need for a while (could also get a black pair at some point)

    Hopkinson in merlot

I have a pair from each, although neither are dress shoes.

I've had a pair of suede chelseas from Jack Erwin for 2+ years and just got a pair of unlined suede penny loafers from Meermin about 2 days ago. I like the Meermin suede better than JE's although the JE's have been very comfortable with little break-in period. Price-wise they are basically the same. You pay $35 (non-refundable) shipping for Meermin (or buy them at $195? at the soho store), which brings the price to basically JE level if not more. Unless you live in NYC so that you can go try on shoes at the Meermin store, buying from them is a bit of a gamble, doesn't matter how many Meermin sizing thread you've pored over. For a first pair, I'd lean towards JE just for their free shipping and returns.

While it's advisable to have 2-3 pairs of dress shoes if you wear a suit nearly everyday, this advice is objectively not helpful.

The total for the two shoes recommend is $660... The OP's budget was about $220... at the top end. OP hasn't indicated he's ignorant of dress shoes, or has none, just that he needs a new pair of black cap toes. Neither of these recommendations meet his requirements.

For what it's worth, those Exchange Places don't look nearly as good in person as they do online. I've got a pair in my car right now that I picked up a few weeks ago when they were only $200. They're in my car because I'm probably taking them back to the store after work. The "slightly chiseled toe" turns out to be a sawed-off chisel toe, which comes dangerously close to a square toe . At least, it does in 12D.

I would suggest OP consider the following option, which I also have and may instead of the Exchange Places (I'm also in the market for a black cap toe):

    https://www.nordstromrack.com/shop/p...rd?color=BLACK

Construction and materials do seem to be a step below AE, but the shape of the last is much nicer.
