    Bummer. Do NOT speed.

Who's the breadwinner, you or your wife? Did you get the ticket because you were bored at home while she was at work and had to go out joy riding?

    You know I'm kidding, right?

At the same time, since you've told us this much of the story, I do find myself wanting to learn more.

@Alex, if you don't have a very big yard, I would actually recommend the Black & Decker electric edger and blower (yardhog/edgehog series). They are sold at Home Depot and have held up really well for me so far. I only have about a 0.2-0.25 acre lot though, so I don't mind using an extension cord.

@alan, sorry to hear about the series of unfortunate events! Was the single income household planned? I would love to allow my wife to stay home, but we have to get these student loans paid off. Can't wait to kick Sallie Mae to the curb.

We actually have a large tax bill this year. My wife and I got raises last year and jumped up a tax bracket. Had to adjust the w4s bc it turns out we didn't have enough withheld for the new tax rate... Turns out the challenge is quite timely!

The assumption is the wife is the one to stay home. Some things never change, do they.

I guess that was directed at me... I just said I would like for her to be able to, but that's because she has told me previously that she wants to stay home with our son. No assumption being made here, other than you assuming I feel like wives should be the one home in a single income household. Your assumption would be incorrect.

The single income is temporary and planned. My wife is switching careers and taking about 4-6 months off because our first child is expected in June. We just didn't anticipate all these other issues. We have As "backup plan" savings account for these situations so we're fine. I just hate wasting money more than just about anything.

It is for me. The main reason it makes more sense for the husband to be the bread winner is that when you're trying to have kids, the guy is not the one that will have to be out of work for a while during the pregnancy. My wife wants to work but will take about 6 months off for each kid. Once you're done having kids, then you're back on even ground again.

Extra 50% off sale items at Club Monaco is super tempting.
