I thinks its all preferential really. My pet peeve is people who wear it open - I just don't like how a DB jacket looks completely unbuttoned, but hey if you put on too warm a jacket on a not-so-cold day, then better to not sweat your ass off, then worry about not being paparazzi ready.

Personally, if its cold, I'm going to have all the buttons done up and the collar up. My peacoat (Polo) has 6 buttons, so I would never have the top and bottom undone - that would indicate its not peacoat weather to me. Like Mr. Gosling there - one button holding his jacket closed? That looks ridiculous to me. I will usually only undo the bottom button if I'm sitting or driving anyway.

Due to the peacoat being a classic military coat I believe it would be correct to wear it as worn by the navy servicemen.

    Collar down
    All buttons fastened

    Bottom button, never.
    Top button, usually, almost always.
Popped collar without the necessary weather conditions, absolutely not!

Why would you wear a pea coat in inappropriate weather conditions to start with?
