I don't have many guidelines atm as I'm trying to remain rather open minded about the price/styles. Only thing I'm 100% about is that it should be black. Feel free to link me to any.

@Scofield, what type of weather are you thinking about wearing this in? The reason I ask is because I just purchased my first leather jacket, and I knew I wanted it to be used for warmer weather as a light jacket. Therefore, I was looking for lambskin as the material because it tends to be thinner and softer. The jacket I got is very comfortable to wear in the 60s and 50s with a shirt, t-shirt or light sweater. As it cools down over here in Istanbul Ill be seeing how cold I can go with this guy, but I imagine down into 40s and 30s as long as I have a sweater underneath. So for you, do you want your jacket to be tougher and for colder climates, or a lighter jacket? If the former, go with cowhide or horsehide. If the latter, lambskin or maybe goatskin. Also, a leather jacket is a good investment piece, look into saving up some more money or check your second hand shops. For new and American made, SchottNYC is definitely the move to make I would say. Will probably invest in a heavier horsehide or cowhide jacket a few years down the road.
Regarding style, I personally like the first that you posted. It is similar to the one that I purchased (although I went for a tanish brown):
Good luck on your search.

My wife got me this:

and I love it. I was not sold on the moto style whatsoever but tried it on and loved it. 25% off now, but she works for the company so we got it 75% off. Having worn it, def worth the sale price

Okay, so just to update I ended up buying this one on black friday with a 30% off code:
http://www.kennethcole.com/product/i...omNumOfProd=14
came out to 315 (350 after taxes), which was just about at the upper end of my price range. small fits perfect, although the sleeves could stand to be just a bit shorter. looks wise it was exactly what i wanted. only complaint besides the sleeves is that i feel the jacket could stand to be a just a bit thicker. the leather is surprisingly good quality. feel free to weigh in.
