First thing that came to mind when I read the title was "WTF?"

Hmm. Not my favorite, tbh. I'd stick with wool if I were you. Unless you happen to moonlight as a death metal rocker... with a nautical theme.

my inclination is, if it could ever ever ever, ever ever ever-evuh (-Smokey, Friday) be called a trenchcoat, by anyone, you don't want it in leather.

My immediate instinct is like JC's... stick with the classic wool... but it's hard to say without knowing anything more about the leather one.

My general feeling is that leather makes a pretty strong statement, so it's best to use it judiciously. When it comes to jackets, you don't need much to say what you're trying to say - which is why I think waist-length jackets like motorcycle jackets and bombers work really well in leather. Once you get to trench coat length, though, you've gone from "tough guy" to "people-cross-the-street-to-avoid-you guy." Since a pea coat is between those in length it really is kind of a toss-up as to whether it will work or not.

Have you got anything in particular in mind?

You never know when you've discovered sartorial poutine--delicious in practice, off in description.
