Personally, pass. I like cardigans, but the shawl gives them a rather precious, effeminate air. Unless you are a world class boxer - http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/14/bo...+tunney&st=nyt

I'm a fan of the shawl collar cardigans in general, but I don't particularly like LEC's version.

I ordered some (3 I think) from LEC last fall and they just generally didn't seem like quality pieces to me. The material seemed to be really thin and flimsy (particularly the shawls). They wrinkled really easily, as well.

On the other hand, the cardigan in Jason Carreira's picture looks a lot more "plush" than the one I got. Maybe I'll give LEC another chance with their cardigans.

I got mine and I love it. It's very warm (too warm for the day I wore it). Since I'm up here in the snowy north it'll get plenty of use.

    Shawl update:

I grabbed this guy in navy. I guess it's the less popular cousin of the shaker. Linen/cotten blend. It's definitely a top layer sweater, but I'm wearing as I type this and I'm not burning up. I got it in small and it fits decently now, but I've heard that it stretches over time. We'll see.

There's also a sweatshirt style shawl by Mossimo at Target. I reminds me of the ON one Joe talked about a few weeks ago, but at half the price ($22.99)! I probably won't get that because I don't wanna be shawl cardigan guy, but I suppose that's better than being hoodie guy.

Hmmm... mine's not here yet so I'll have to see how the medium fits. I guess I can trade it out for a small if necessary.

LEC Shaker Cardigan is pretty great in dark grey, but know that you need to size down. It gets baggy under the arms after a few uses.

Eh. A little too slow I guess. No more smalls left on LEC.

I'm happy with my Old Navy shawl neck cardigan. It's the same one featured in the "Ditch the Hoodie" article on the front page. I would have liked a more tailored cut but compared to most Old Navy tops on me it's a fairly nice fit. Often their small feel similar to many other companies medium. This cardigan is not like that so I had a pleasant surprise today.

I don't think it looks like a feminine piece of clothing at all. They've been around a long time and are a classic look when done conservatively. There are fashion forward versions that look straight out of the women's department. I wouldn't bother with any of those.

If you purchase a quality piece you have a good chance of escaping the "in"-syndrome. There are a few catches; for instance, if it is clearly a quick-to-live-quick-to-die garment (piano tie?), it won't matter who made it, it'll will look out of place soon enough. But if you are buying a piece that has been a staple in many gentlemen's wardrobe then you have a fair shot.

Go for things that'll distinguish it's authenticity and stature - maybe go for a thick cable knit instead of a plain weave, maybe go for a slight nautical theme or stay safe with a standard theme (avoid the cheesy nautical themes for your best shot), and of course a healthy-but-not-overkill dose of wood or toggle buttons to set it off (though, risky at this point b/c it might hit that aforementioned cheesy nautical theme).

    Best of luck!

I just got my shaker cardigan out for the first time this fall. I have the medium which fits great over a couple of layers. I am 5' 11" and 180lbs.

The shaker is durable and I love the wood buttons, just realize that it is a chunky outer piece.

That shaker shawl has been $35 the ENTIRE YEAR. So yeah, I don't expect it to drop in price.

Dunno about the fit. Returns are easy if you live near a Sears.

Yeah, seriously thinking about that one in small. Anyone have it? Doubt it gets lower than $35. Sounds pretty rugged and durable. I just question the fit even in small.
