zcm it's a fine outfit, blues and greys work really well with black. i'm pretty outspoken about the overblown internet aversion towards black shoes though.

i think you should opt for larger lapels though, they seem proportionately off with the rest of your frame

I think it looks good, and welcome! A little prep, a little fashion forward, and a good bit of dappered mixed in.

          Thanks MaxMan fey.

IIRC fey it was your post over in that "What AEs to buy" thread that made me want to post this outfit. IMO, I don't see anything wrong with the black bals and this outfit, but I was hoping to start a bit of a discussion on the subject.

As for the lapels, I hear what you all are saying about the 'skinny' lapels but I have come to the conclusion that it doesn't bother me. Few people would even notice they are smaller than the typical 3". As long as they are not comically small or wide (say between 3.5 and 2.5 inches) I would consider wearing the jacket. To each their own.

Personally, it's not an aversion to black but rather a strong preference for brown. When I'm getting dressed, I consistently reach for my brown shoes. Granted, The ratio is around 12:1 in favor of brown. That said, I find that my brown shoes in all their various shades work better with the outfits I end up wearing.

imo if a man has a suit, they should have a black cap toe balmoral. it's like the "no effort/thinking required" answer to "what shoe to wear with this suit," instead of reading those unnecessarily complex infographics.

wedding? black shoes. funeral? black shoes. interview? black. opera? night club? anything at night? parachuting into casino royale? breaking and entering? black shoes please!

I think that could be the reason most 'hate' on black shoes. I have been making it a point to wear them a little more often. I like brown shoes, especially AE's bourbon color, but I do not like them enough to not wear black shoes. The shoes I got with the Nathans were black RL Slatons (2 for 250). I like them a lot too. I don't were jeans all that often, but I think they could go really well with a pair of grey denim I have.

I absolutely agree that they can go with just about anything, but I don't think they are the alpha and the omega. I love too many of my shoes to wear a single pair of shoes to all of those style opportunities.

i didn't mean to imply that they'd be the best for all occasions, just that if you phoned it in and paired just about any suit with a nice black captoe, you'd still look appropriate for so many situations. most of my dress shoes are brown also!

                    Gotcha.

So if I said, "If you only own one pair if balmorals they should be black," would you agree?

B Heals, two thumbs up from me. Looks like a good, casual spring outfit! Everything fits well too. Makes me want to go back to Napa just thinking about it...

Love it here. Lucky enough to be born and raised in the Napa Valley.

These are Boardrooms (JAB Park Aves). I got them in the 2 for 250 Shoebank sale. I didn't have any black balmorals so I figured I should snag a pair. As I was getting ready I thought why not bust them out finally. IMO they look very conservative, but still sleek. What do you guys think? The rest of the outfit too informal for them?
Looks great. I take it you're from Pittsburgh?

Thanks! I did my undergrad at Carnegie Mellon and I moved back last August. I say "yinz" here as a dumb joke that I guess only a few people really get. From time to time I catch myself saying "yinz" but its not that often. I am actually from Western/Central Pennsylvania (Pennsyl-tucky). I do say pop instead of soda now though.

I like black shoes. Just found it harder to wear without a jacket or sweater to cover the black belt. I read somewhere possibly here that the bold horizontal black line draws too much attention than say a brown belt which gives the affect of cutting your body in half vs one long line. Not such a problem if you're wearing black gray or dark blue pants.
