I was inspired by the plaid tie thread yesterday, and the weather is warming up here so I'm trying out my new plaid cotton "picnic table" tie. It's on the darker side, but not as dark as the picture seems to indicate.

      Shirt: Roundtree & York

Tie: Roundtree & York - pinpoin button down

Pants: Banana Republic - textured cotton

Shoes: Sperry Topsider Gold Cup 2-eyelet boat shoes

      Watch: Fossil Walter chronograph

I equate these particular boat shoes to a Lincoln Town Car. They're not much to look at from the outside, but they have a fantastically comfortable and plush interior. (In my case, deer skin lined and as comfortable as orthopedics.)

All that beign said, something about this get-up just feels wrong. I just can't put a finger on it. I started the morning with a tie bar and fully buttoned up, but that felt like an awkward mish-mash. I lost the tie bar and opened the collar button. It's better, but I still feel like something is just "off". Maybe I'm just not feeling photogenic today or maybe it's because I'm still getting used to wearing boat shoes. Maybe I'm having trouble shifting gears into spring. I need honest opinions today. You can be as brutal as you need to.

@ALan, love the Town Car ref...the outfit looks damn good to me...love the color pallette on the tie. It really brings the rest of the get up to life. I am a boat shoe lover and will always be, so IMO, those Lincolns are Cadillac Grade...Are the pants straight leg?

Thanks, Max. Maybe it's just my own hang-ups. Yeah, the pants are straight leg. I bought them a few years ago to attend a beach wedding. I have trouble fitting into most tapered pants.

Haha Alan, just cus you said be as brutal as you need to, I have a question.

Are those chinos cuffed or just rolled up? I have noticed I few of your pictures where the bottom of the pants looked rolled up. I like a nice cuff on dress pants, and a rolled up look on jeans for contrast, but I feel like rolling up the bottom of chinos gives a "wearing my older brothers hand-me-downs" kind of look.

Yeah, they're rolled up... The same goes for a lot of my pics. The 30's are often too short, and 32's are virtually always too long. So I usually buy 32's and roll them up. Someday I'll get them hemmed. I've just been lazy about it. I know what you mean, though.

That being said, I don't mind rolling up chinos with boat shoes, and I'd even roll them up one more time if I weren't at work... And it's hard to tell from the pics, but these aren't really chinos in the traditional sense. They have patch pockets with buttoned flaps in the back, and they're not twill - they're MUCH softer than that.

I appreciate the honesty, though. It's a valid observation!

Damn, I have the same 30/32 problem, it is really frustrating. Nice thing is getting a pair of pants hemmed a little shorter is about the cheapest tailoring you can get done

                Comment

Yeah, it's not the cost of hemming them that's stopepd me. It's my being too lazy to just go down there and get it done. :-( I guess I really should if people are noticing , though...

I have the 30/32 problem as well. My true inseam is like... 30.5. Depending on the maker and the specific garment, though, I can generally get away with a 30. I used to wear all 32s, especially in my "pre-style" days when I wore mostly baggier pants. Tapered pants that are slightly too short can look ok, but loose-fit pants that are slightly too short just look awful.

Plus there's the added factor of whether a 30 inseam will shrink too much or a 32 inseam won't shrink enough. I have a pair of jeans I need to get hemmed because I thought they would shrink quite a bit and they didn't shrink at all.

I like the look Alan. I'm a sucker for plaid ties. It may just be the camera angle, but it looks to me that the rolled pant leg may look a little less "off" if the pants were a bit more tapered below the knee.

I think you're probably on to something there, Greg.

... and I just noticed I flip flopped the description on my shirt and tie. Obviously not wearing a pinpoint button down tie (though they're both Roundtree & York). :-P

Suited up today for an interview for a summer internship that I really want. I think the interview went pretty well, but I guess I'll find out soon enough.
