Can you narrow a suit jacket from the back seam?

I have a suit from the days before I paid enough attention to fit, and it's too wide in the shoulders. There's a seam down the center of the back of the jacket, and I was wondering if it it's possible to undo the seam, bring the two sides of the jacket closer together, and redo the seam, to narrow the jacket. I know it would bring the side pockets farther back, but I'm thinking if it's less than an inch per side it wouldn't really be noticeable, and it would make the shoulders fit much better. Am I crazy?

Yes you can, but not by a lot.

Ask someone to grab a handful of fabric between your shoulders to see if it corrects it enough.

The sides/hips can come in from the back or side seams.

A jacket with a center vent will be very difficult to do that on whereas one with side vents will be easier. Bring it to a tailor, see what they say.

Oh didn't realize how old this thread was. Good job spammer!
