    I think it's perfectly fine. I even feel like it's too matchy-matchy to have a burgundy belt with burgundy shoes, but at the same time, I'm at a loss for suggesting a better alternative.

    i mean if they are in a totally different family of brown. for example a saddle brown belt, with dark brown shoes. is this a style faux pas?

    As long as they're in the same family of brown, you should be ok. Of course, while exactly matching the belt to your shoes is not essential, it does tend to look better the closer they are.
