    Filson alternates?

    Hey everyone,

Looking to buy a new briefcase for work but this time I want it to last. I had a Cole haan briefcase that broke in 1.5 years - that thing was over 200 bucks and the hardware broke so easily.

I like the Filson bag look and quality, but everyone seems to have it. Also it looks a little big on me as a smaller guy.

Any recommendations for alternates? Ideally 14-15 inches in width instead of 16 inch+ size. I prefer leather but a nice twill/canvas is ok too.

The Filson price point at ~300 would be great, but I'm willing to spend up to 500-700 if it's a good quality bag.

    thanks!

Tusting makes some amazing bags in that price range. You can buy some of them from Levenger, I believe. Also they pop up on ebay pretty often.

The clipper is probably what you're looking for. They have two sizes and the small is 15 inches.

filson is usually the cheap alternative. they kind of compromise their competitors by using drastically lower quality leather. you can certainly buy less expensive thing than they have, but they're going to be exponentially worse quality.

I have the LL Bean Heritage Waxed Canvas briefcase in green. It's durable, fits my laptop nicely and comes with a sweet red flannel lining. And the kicker is that it was only $129.

It's not really the same style as the Filson, but I have the Will Hank:

I managed to get one of their medium brown on closeout, which is the only reason I jumped at it, but I'm very happy with it. The leather is fairly heavy, and the dual pockets makes it easy to pack when I have to fly. It's 15.5", but I feel like it actually wears a bit smaller than that.

Hey this brand looks great. Full grain leather? Yes please! I actually prefer the Marston, just more my style. I like it to be a bit sleek/simple.

Also I found this just now:

But quality of the zippers and leather is suspect compared to Tusting.

The LL bean heritage looks good but I think its the same size issue as the Filson for me.
I like the Will hank shape but personally I just never preferred the pebbled leather look.

Thanks guys I'll keep searching as well. I'll post what I end up getting. If anyone else has good options I'm all ears too!

Cobbler Union has an amazing laptop bag. I have it in a cognac color. Their website shows the black is sold out, but I was in store yesterday looking at their shoes and they had another cognac on the table with the shoes. I would reach out to them tomorrow to see if they have any pics or a link they can refer you to. I get a lot of compliments on the bag and I love it. I feel like it was in the 300-400 dollar price range and made very well with great leather.

You might be interested in Linjjer. It’s a bit above my budget for getting banged around the subway but I really want one:

Thanks it does look good, too bad online oos

I do dig the simplicity of Linjer. I love smooth leather look but I'm always conflicted because I know it will likely scratch and wear easily.

I checked out waterfield designs - look great too but more casual/rugged than what I'm looking for

I reached out to Cobbler Union and they did state it was an error that it was not on their site. Here is a link to that laptop bag. I was a little off on pricing however. It is listed at 475.

They've been mentioned a ton of times on the main page, but if you dont mind the branding patch, you could check out Land's End's waxed canvas briefcase. Similarly styled (and color-schemed) to Filsons, at a substantially lower cost. And Lands End has stellar customer service/return policy, if you dont like it or if it prematurely wears out or breaks. $129 normally, on sale for $77.40 currently, (sales change daily at LE).

I have two bags that I use for work and like both

The one I use most often is a Frost River Navigator, which is pretty much bomb proof, although a little bigger than you are after. They have a variety of sizes though
                          https://www.frostriver.com/navigator/

I also have a Gustin in Horween Chromexcel, which is much smaller, though holds a lot (I'm a big dude, it fits a tad smaller than I'd like). Seems well made but I don't use it as much as the frost river. They have offered it in other colors, but I have it in the burgundy, which is actually back right now

I've got a Filson tablet briefcase that I highly recommend, if you can find one (Details here). Check ebay.

Filson doomed this product by misnaming it--I can easily fit my bulky 14-inch Lenovo ThinkPad with the extended battery, with room for more.
