I would suggest that any brown family leather with a hint of reddish hue would pair well with grey, blue, navy, and black, etc. You could even polish in a reddish hue to tan bag, if you so dared, with a nice cream/lotion polish. If you do it properly, you'll achieve some patina-look and greater color depth, the way the Dappered site has an article about polishing the JC Penney Wingtip Boots with a darker color.

Maybe go on Ebay and see if you can find a cheap rehab project, and apply a bit of elbow grease to see if you can resurrect a good quality full-grain leather bag that has been neglected (clean and condition it first. probably condition it a few times before you attempt polish...you may find that once it's clean and conditioned, you love the color anyway). If you're into that sort of thing. That way, if it doesn't work, you can probably resell it for what you bought it, give or take.

Does it have to be leather? Totally get the aesthetic of leather but my tan Filson is pretty joyous to own and it's built like a tank.

You can get like new ones for pretty cheap on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...se&_sacat=4250

Ā£20 for shipping. Not too bad in my opinion.

I have a black (almost grain) leather bag from Cole Haan. I use it with every outfit (black or brown shoes). The grain aspect makes it look less stuffy.

Dark brown or black. Both are easy to dress down. Too light and you hit the formal ceiling. It also depends on what image you are projecting. A thick, quality dark leather bag with lots of wear says, "I'm an experienced world traveling road warrior."

I'm too cheap to drop $800 on a leather bag, so i split the difference with a black Filson briefcase.

Julius12 and PlayerKing, I couldn't have said it better myself. The bag starts to get a purse complex if it matches perfectly. Now, I do have a have a hard medium brown briefcase but my bag is a light tan that matches nothing I wear.

I have one that's pretty close to Allen Edmonds dark chili that looks good.

Yup, that's why I'm going with tan. It doesn't match any of my clothing items, but more importantly (for me), it doesn't clash with anything either.

My briefcase is cognac, which is essentially tan. It's very versatile and gets a lot of compliments. A briefcase is not a purse. It's not supposed to match your shoes or anything else.

started a topic What is your most versatile leather bag color?

What is your most versatile leather bag color?

I'm a minimalist, so I want to have just one bag that I can use for any situation that can go with suits or jeans and a tee. I'm planning on getting a briefcase/structured messenger bag. As for the color, I'm going for tan, which can go with black or brown (or pretty much any color) shoes. I'm pretty much set on getting it, but I'm curious as to what others have to say. Thoughts?
