PS I owned and wore several Fossil watches through high school and college. Never had an issue with them.
I just find that Skagen has simpler and dressier designs than Fossil proper.

For instance, most of their watches are pretty slim and come with clean dials, which most Fossil watches are a little too big/busy/sporty for my tastes.

    Obviously, YMMV.

Personal preference. I already have several quartz watches and want more of a artistic, mechanical work. Autos are just cool?

That site is to watches as Dappered is to style (not to suggest style and watches are mutually exclusive, but the expertise between sites certainly is). Just take your time. I know it's exciting, but don't jump on the first one you see -- TRUST ME. Overall, I've had some great experiences on there, and you can absolutely save when it comes to picking up a luxury watch, however I must warn you: it's *very* addictive. Tag -> Bell & Ross -> Omega -> IWC = very pissed off checkbook.

Automatic chronograph movements are much more complicated than a typical automatic so there's really no way to make them that cheap new. I was on the hunt for an auto chrono myself a few years back and wound up getting this one: http://www.pmwf.com/Phorum/read.php?26,394674,394674

It's technically not "automatic" because you manually wind it up, not powered by a rotating counterweight. I love the lack of a logo and the cool back.

The other suggestion I would have for you would be to check out Victorinox automatic watches, I have seen a few of their automatic chronographs under $500, they're all sapphire crystal, and they're swiss made.

good luck and let us know what you wind up buying.

also if you're on a budget, like myself, check out PMWF.com (Poor Mans Watch Forum) for some tips, then cross reference with watchuseek.

I couldn't find a auto chrono that satisfied me for that price so I went a different direction and ended up with a Bernhardt Binnacle Diver. An auto chrono is still on my list, but it'll have to remain a long term wish. Thanks for all the great advice!

Does anyone know if the strap on the Skagen 858 is replaceable? And if so, where to find straps? Would love to get an new strap as oppose to having to retire the watch. Thanks!

Here is the watch I got in 2008 or 09 I think...it was a combo birthday/father's day gift. At the time, it was around a $500 watch I believe...but can be had for cheaper now.

Here is a link to it at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...00I-000A-001O9

But I also saw one that sold on ebay for less than $100. I'd guess you could find one for less than $200 if you googled.

It's a great watch and I wear it just about every day...no problems other than typical scuffs on the stainless steel bracelet...but that can always be cleaned up or replaced....

EDIT...maybe it's not easy to find for less than $200. Searched on ebay and only found one listed for below that price. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...at=0&_from=R40

There was a post on 12 watches for dads/grads this week. Also a recent review on the Seiko monster. Depends on what style you're looking for and what you consider to be inexpensive.

Orient watches are a great place to start. I bought my first a month ago and love it. I got it for just over $100.
