    Button a casual sports coat?

Many of us agree that you ought to button a suit jacket when standing.

But what about a casual (cotton, linen, etc.) sports coat? Is there latitude here or does the same rule apply? What's your preference?

Pretty sure the same rules apply. Buttoning a jacket isn't so much about formality, as it is achieving the correct drape and shape with your jacket. Jackets were designed to be buttoned and they won't really fit you correctly unless they are.

I think it's the same situation for casual sportcoats. I would only deviate for a very casual, unstructured, rugged jacket like the Target Kensington, which I think looks fine unbuttoned. But any structured jacket looks better buttoned when standing.
