Sweater #1: 100% cotton
So I ordered a sweater from Lands' End awhile ago and it's about time I wash it. The care instructions indicate that it can be machine washed but needs to be blocked flat to dry. The sweater is 100% cotton and isn't the best fitted one--this was before I knew what a fitted sweater should look like and at the time I wanted something to replace all my hoodies.
I'm tempted to throw it in the dryer on high to shrink it but I don't know if that will have some adverse effect other than shrinking, like if the threads get all warped and then the sweater simply becomes unusable.
Anyone had any experiences with doing this, whether on purpose or by accident? I wouldn't return the sweater at this point, I mean I've used it enough times over the past three months since I've gotten it.
Sweater #2: 100% acrylic
The knitted sweater below is heavier, more textured, and definitely one size too big (medium). The care instructions on this one are to hand wash it and then lay flat to dry.
Although the sweater is too large, I can get away with using it as a layer underneath a jacket or sport coat so it's not totally unusable. I'm tempted to throw this guy in the washer with hot water and blast it with a hot dryer to shrink it, though I don't know if acrylic shrinks the same as cotton.

I could end up with two unusable sweaters or two better fitting ones. Too risky or what the hell?
