Official "How Does This Fit?" Thread

I'm on a mission to find my "perfect" jeans. I've recently lost weight and my jeans are falling off me. Also, I've always been a straight fit guy, but I really like the more polished silhouette of a slimmer fit. Problem is I'm having a hard time finding a slim that works. Here I am comparing a pair of Bonobos Stretch Lightweight Jeans in Slim (34x32) to an old pair of Levi's 505 Straight Fit (36x32). The Bonobos fit perfect around my waist but you can see they are "pulling" around my thighs and butt. The Levi's just have a lot of extra fabric.

I know I'm not super slim, and that its easy for a guy my proportions to look silly in too tight slim, I just want a good tailored look. I don't have pictures, but a few months ago, I tried BR Slim Fit (36x32) and I was shocked at how baggy they were. Laying them over the top of my straight fit jeans, they seemed to have the exact same cut. Maybe if I sized down it would work better?

Looking for any suggestions on brands and fits that would work better for me.

Ninja edit - I've tried on some athletic fit jeans in the past, and found that they were roomier up top than I need and that the calf/ankle was too narrow. I don't know why some brands make them narrower than slim fit at the bottom. Seems that is too drastic and makes you look too top heavy? Open to suggestions on brands that do athletic fit right though.

i just bought a new jcrew ludlow suit and I am having an issue with the shoulder kind of rolling and not laying flat. Is this a fit issue or is it from shipping and will steam out? I've never seen this before.

Oh man, that is weird! Have you tried steaming it out yet? You could also take it to your tailor to get their opinion. Otherwise, the fit looks great!

Jacket is way too short at least from the front. It should cover your butt which usually occurs around the 2nd knuckle on your index finger. Based on your picture, the jacket doesn't even touch the base of your fingers.

Unfortunately, I did not - should have. I tried the finger-curling test, and it came up a little short - basically ends at the top thumb knuckle (where the thumb is joined to the palm) rather than the middle thumb knuckle.

Basically 0.5-1 inches shorter than Ron and Dgamby's pictures above - if it were an inch longer I wouldn't be worried at all

Looks fine from here and I wouldn't trust the finger-curl test, anyway. I'd be more interested in where the bottom of the jacket is relative to your zipper. Assuming you're average height and wearing properly fitted pants, the jacket should be about halfway down the zipper, perhaps a bit lower if you're a tall guy.

Looks okay to me. Did you happen to take a picture without your arm raised?

That's helpful. I had a bad experience with my last tailor and will likely be looking for a new one. Probably will start off with something smaller than removing the sleeve when I try out a new tailor. I may get some work done on these down the road but wanted to make sure that they were passable as is.

They are. I don't think many people pay attention to fit as much as we do. I have a really great tailor and would always recommend finding one, yourself. Not many things fit me well off the rack so that was important for me. I can get away with wearing things OTR enough of the time but the difference that my tailor can make is very noticeable to me and worth it for a lot of what I wear. And if he doesn't think he can improve something enough for me to spend the money on it, he'll tell me so. I think it's worth some time on Yelp and shopping around, if you have the inclination.

If I paid 50 for a coat, I'd take some of the savings and have my tailor fit it perfectly for me (you can make something that was very affordable look like it's a million bucks with good tailoring). But if you didn't, I don't think anyone would say they're poorly fit as is.

Thanks for the input. They were 50 each so I probably won't spend the money to have any major tailoring done. Might shorten the sleeves a hair. I just wanted to make sure they didn't look off.

They don't look way off but the shoulders could be improved a tad. I think this can be fixed by adjusting the sleeve pitch so if you want to spend $50 and have a competent tailor, they can remove the arm and reattached at a better angle to fix.

But I think both look fine as is. You could slightly fix the back from the wrinkles with tailoring but it is up to you.

Yes I guess I could visit the tailor. I started looking online and I saw several videos where creases can be corrected. The ones I saw were symmetrical but I am sure the process is similar.
