i appreciate the thoughtful response. i think the most salient point is the shoulders, but i'm willing to live with it. it's a 25 dollar, 100% wool coat - i'm not really looking to throw 250 dollars at a wool/polyester frankenstein to be honest.
i'm going to wear it this week and see how the length feels and how i like the look. then i'll see if i can find a tailor that is comfortable bringing it up to slightly below the knee.
as an aside, i combed through style forum and there are plenty of calf-length and/or wide lapel overcoats on there, that people with far more exacting tastes have spent considerably more money on. i think most contemporary men's style is a bit too trend-focused/groupthink.
