If you're looking for an under-$500 heirloom, I'd go for some nice cufflinks. Outside of that, not much would last long enough or warrant heirloom status. (I'm a lefty, so fancy pens don't really do much for me, other than get smudged and ink up the side of my hand)

Also, congrats! I hear the CA bar was a nasty one (not that NYC was a slouch, but all the same).

Ill second the dress shoes option. When I graduated from college, I had saved my money, and I bought a pair of Alden 975 LWB in Shell. Never had I spent that much on shoes, but it was special, and I don't regret it one bit. If the $500 limit is a hard cap, Carmina is where I'd look. Their shoes are fantastic, better than Alden at their price point.

Congrats on passing. To me the best would be a nice watch. My mom got me a movado when I graduated college and it means so much when I wear it out. I don't think shoes hit that heirloom level and same with a pen. Find a nice watch or invest that money for a future nicer congrats for graduating gift.

That Hamilton sale that Joe posted! some really nice Autos and a few Mechanicals in that sale:

These are my favorite ~$500 or under:

It's something that will last you a lifetime and is timeless (puns intended).

The most important thing is to find good tutors, because to research all the info alone, to find the sources with books and examples of exam is wasting time.

Congratulations! When I passed my Ph.D. dissertation defense (no idea about whether that's analogous) my wife gave me a bottle of Scotch, priced at half your budget. It didn't get passed down, though--more passed around. :-)

This thread is from 2015 and the person who resurrected it has one post, which isn't relevant to the original question.
