    Business Appropriate Shoe Suggestion?

Hey guys. I wanted some advice regarding business appropriate dress shoes. I was thinking of picking up a pair of Allen Edmonds Strands (in walnut or black) but was wondering if they would stand out too much. Any suggestions? Ideally, a nice pair of black or brown shoes would be best. Not looking to splurge, but I would like a pair or two that won't break on my after a few months. Thanks!

It depends on your work environment. For a very conservative environment, I would get AE Park Avenue or Fifth Avenue in Brown and/or Black. I think the Strand in Dark Brown or Black will not stand out much either. I personally would not wear the Walnut color in a conservative industry like Banking.

Juan pretty much nailed it. There's really nto much left to say. I will drop a bit of opinion, though...

I think the Strand is much too handsome of a shoe to make them in black. It soaks up so much of the detail. The Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue are solid black shoes. I'd save the Strand for brown or walnut (assuming you're wearing them appropriately).

        I third Juan.

I think the Fifth Avenue in brown is the perfect blend of simple but slightly fancy.

The Park Avenue is also fine, but a little more boring.

Walnut anything is too loud for most business casual offices, IMO.

I disagree with Juan and think Walnut is perfectly fine in conservative industries (at least in NYC generally; of course your office culture, location, etc. should be taken into account if you care whether you stand out or not). However, they probably shouldn't be your go-to business shoes, but more of a once-in-a-while shoe. It sounds like you're looking for a "workhorse shoe" (one that's worn a lot), for which a black or dark brown would be more appropriate.

I will second Juan's suggestion of the Park Ave or Fifth Aves as more conservative pairs that may be good as workhorse shoes. I'm wearing some dark brown Parks that are my favorite work shoes right now. Nice look, good quality, but won't draw undue attention.

It's really up to you. I think the Strand is a damn beautiful shoe. The walnut probably would stand out a little more, but I think in a good way compared to the crap shoes worn by the majority of other guys. Some people find the Park Avenue boring and too conservative, but I have a pair and I really like them. They go with pretty much anything.

My vote would be that if you are going to get Strands, you would want them in a brown or walnut. They are an awesome design that pairs well with pretty much anything (Strands and sweatpants? I'm open-minded, let's see it people!). However, I feel like some of that diversity of use goes away with black shoes. Disclaimer, I am a much bigger fan of brown shoes with grey and especially navy than black shoes.

With that said, I recognize the need for a solid "go-to" black dress shoe. I think cap toe black shoes are great because they can be conservative enough in situations, and aggressive (if that's the word) in others. However, I was checking out eBay for black shoes and came across a make I probably wouldn't have really considered. I picked up AE Richmond's that were in great shape for a fair price and they have beaten expectations. The toe shape is close to perfect in my book, and the wingtip is subtle enough but definitely there. With a fresh shine, I don't know many shoes that beat it. Pictures online don't look great but the moral of the story is to just expand your options. I'll try to get some better pictures of mine because the one's already online that I've seen don't do the shoe justice.

FYI on those Maglis that Kenneth posted, Bruno Magli 12 is like AE 13 or 12.5. They run very long.

@Drew - those look nice but not sure if I would pay $350 for a shoe made in Vietnam.
