Quick question....holiday party Friday. It's an all day/night thing...lots of drinking, eating, some local bars after the main event. Is this too much? Should I wear a more basic tie with the square? Ditch the square for a solid color? Now that I'm trying the combo it may be overkill with this tie and square.

I think the PS is a problem both because of the colors with the tie, and because of the pattern with the shirt.

Also my opinion, which is a reflection on my tastes only, is that I can think of no occasion other than a holiday party when I'd wear that tie. So wear the tie and change the pocket square. White is never bad of course, although something that picks up, but does not necessarily match, the red or green would be good.

It is a bit busy. Try swapping out the shirt for one without pattern - white or light blue. I think the tie and PS can work together, but not with the additional pattern you've got in the shirt. I'm all for multiple patterns, but this is just too busy.

since you already have a black peacoat from express, I think you should save your money and not spend on the jcrew. Unless the express peacoat is not warm enough for northern Ca.

I have wanted to try JA from Amazon but have not made a purchase yet. Some of the jackets look good and are 100% wool, it is just trying to figure out what size to order and if the description is accurate. If they turned out to be decent jackets, the $200 price point would open up a ton of options for patterns that people generally ask for on here. Also the lapels are usually 3" which is nice.

I have come back to those a lot, but I'm not crazy about the patch chest pocket. I don't mind patch pockets, but it pushes it decidedly to the casual end of the spectrum, and this blazer will get a majority of its wear on Sundays at church with a silk tie and dress pants (I'm in the choir). Also, $170 seems a bit steep for such a thin blazer.

I'd love something like the Bonobos Academy or Jetsetter blazer. The ninja said they are both unstructured shoulder.

eBay can be great. Although it can also be a fool's errand. I've found a two cashmere mainline Zegna jackets for a little over $200 together. But there's also a lot of orphaned suit jackets out there, sizing is always tough, and telling how soft the shoulders are can be difficult.

Otherwise, sign up for the Sierra Trading Post deal flyers and see if you can get a good HF, Jack Victor or JA on one of their 70% off things.

I've definitely look at ebay, but not rigorously. I'll only buy if it's super cheap, or if it's a cut that I have tried in a store and am certain will fit. For example, this Uniqlo jacket looks tempting:

Current Uniqlo jackets in large fit me perfectly, but peak lapels has me thinking it's an orphaned suit jacket. And even if not, I think I want something more classic (notch lapels) for my workhorse blazer. It also looks flannel, but for $50 I can afford to have a fall/winter blazer as well as a spring/summer blazer.

Personally, I think the pants and blazer might clash a bit, but it's hard to say for sure without actually seeing them together.

Yea, I was thinking that but I saw both of them in person and the pants are a lot darker than the picture so there's more contrast

Yeah the tie is just kind of a more "fun" tie...I don't break it out often, but here and there (I got a few BB ties on ebay for a steal, and that came with). As for the shirt...I should have clarified I was mostly looking for opinions on the tie/square...I probably won't wear that shirt...I already had it on, then threw on the tie, jacket, square. In that situation...I'd probably wear a typical solid white or lighter blue shirt.

Yes. Especially if you're wearing them without socks. The cedar will help maintain the shoes shape while removing excess moisture.

ah, okay. I will then. My primary concern is that my pinky toe pushes on the edge of the shoe and slightly protrudes the regular shape of the shoe. I guess I should stick a shoe tree in there every time post-wear so it returns to it's original shape

what if I fold the square so not as many colors show? Here the green peeks out and can tie in with the green on the tie. Would likely wear with solid light blue shirt. Just curious if this helps make the square a little less of a match with all the colors and helps pull it off more.

Or I might just go with a solid white square.
