What would you put in a custom closet?

This is mostly just a thought exercise, but it would be interesting to see other people's ideas. I'll soon be tearing out our existing master closet and starting over. It's not huge (5.5 x 10), and I'll be sharing it with my wife - probably at about 60/40 with me getting the 40. The primary goal is to squeeze every ounce of usable space out of the closet. We'll definitely have built-in drawers in addition to the typical shelves and rods.

Outside of that, though, here's my practical wish list:

    1.) valet rod
    2.) pull-out tie rack
    3.) stool or bench
    4.) hooks for hats/belts/etc.

Things that I know won't fit, but I would have liked:

    1.) full-sized valet
    2.) shine butler

If you could add anything you wanted into a custom closet, what would you add?

When I am in an Ikea, I always go into their prefabbed closets and check them out. Some of them are a miss for me but every once in a while I think "Man... When I own my own place I am totally building that!" Might be worth a stop if there is one not that far from you.

I know you love your shoes so I would find a way to squeeze as many into a place as possible. Take advantage of the back of the door too. Maybe shoes or an ironing board? I have one of these which I put my outfit for tomorrow on.

Oh, trust me... Shoes are covered! ;-)

... And I expect there will be at least some minor IKEA hacking going on.

          - Two levels of rods for part; 1 level for longer things (overcoats, etc.)
          - Rather than a tie rack, I'd opt for tie drawers**
          - Shoe shelves

**may not be best use of space given your constraints

I like the tie drawer idea. Gotta see how much of a pain it would be to build one.

If you have a tall closet, a wardrobe lift can help

I've seen those. Pretty neat! Sadly, we have 8' ceilings.
