Yeah, but apparently they are using cordovan to describe horsehide. I know that horsehide is not the same thing as cordovan. That is why I think it is misleading. But I read a couple old threads from styleforum and apparently it is not SHELL cordovan.

I have that bag and I really like it. It's very well constructed, top quality leather, and the rivets have never caught on my suit as some posters claimed would happen in that thread.

That said, it is most assuredly NOT shell cordovan. The rep did tell me that it's made from horsehide however.

Billy Reid definitely uses cordovan to describe their footwear in a way I find misleading. They also have stated shoes are goodyear welted when in fact they are all Blake stitched.

In spite of that I love his stuff. lol.

As noted on SF, cordovan is also a color. This is the way that Billy Reid uses the term, not in the shell cordovan context. If you note, all of his items are listed online with the color in the last spot of the name.

I don't think that's true. Both the brown and black versions of those Billy Reid boots state "Captoe and lug-sole lace-up Blucher in cordovan leather." I'm not sure what context this could be correct. It's certainly very misleading and different from how other manufacturers use the term.

Hmm, that's strange. I was looking at the wallets and bags, not boots, but yeah...they're listed as cordovan leather.

Edit: Just spoke with a rep from Billy Reid - they *are* horsehide, but are NOT shell. Very confusing.

That's beyond confusing, I'd call that very misleading if not out and out dishonest.

I have a several B Reid items, and I've found them to be of great quality just for the record.

Going to see if the flagship store on Michigan Ave by me has them. If so, I'll try on the calfskins and make a gametime decision.

EDIT to add sizes 8-10 available on calfskins and 7-11 (missing a few half sizes) on the suedes.

Both are almost certainly C&J. That tan one is pretty interesting. I generally dislike wholecuts because while they look great new, they end up looking terrible once they get creased. Without any details to attract the eye, your eye just gets drawn to any crease or flaws. That stitching to emulate a cap might be enough to make them more wearable.

I remember you saying this previously about your AE wholecuts. That was my thinking as well on the cap toe, but it definitely takes away some from the sleekness of a wholecut. I'm very intrigued by the online pictures so I'm hoping once I see them on my feet I either love them or feel "meh" about them.

I cancelled my order for the boots. I emailed them last night regarding the cancellation and the customer service rep replied as soon as they opened (9am central time). Great customer service! But yeah, they told me that it is "regular cordovan, but not shell cordovan." Very confusing because the internet sometimes refers to shell cordovan as just cordovan.

I guess I'll be keeping my alden burgundy captoes from jcrew. It's strange how the internet just loves color #8 for its versatility but I find it to be very hard to pair the boots with my wardrobe. Maybe they're just too rich for my blood and I should go back to wearing cheaper shoes....

The price is right (and ALL sizes look available), but it's got one 1-star review (although the big flaw, the laces, according to another review will be replaced by Lands End for free, which sounds like Land's End), and I'm having a hard time imagining what I'd wear them with, and I'm not sure that I need another pair of cheap boots where I can't answer that question. What do you guys think - would you wear it? With what?

I'm in the same boat. *intentional pun* They look great but don't think I would wear it with jeans or chinos. If it's cold enough to wear boots, it isn't time to wear boat shoes.
