Do any of you wear a 40R Contemporary in Spier & Mackay? I'm itching to order a jacket from them but want to nail the shoulder fit the first time. For reference, I fit pretty darn well in a 40R J.Crew Ludlow and also a 41 Regent from Brooks Brothers. My measurements are:
Chest: 41"
Shoulders: 18.5-19 depending on who measures.
Smallest part of the waste (above the belly button): 35"
Height 6'1"
Weight 182
The measurements on the website for S&M show a 18.1" shoulder width for the 40R and 18.5" for the 42R, but measurements only tell so much. With that said, the 42 will likely be too large everywhere else, thus my predicament (yes, I can always have it tailored, but I want to get as close as possible OTR).
Thanks in advance!

I am also a 40R in the Ludlow (a little snug on me), and the S&M contemporary fit is the best fitting jacket I have on the chest and shoulders. Unfortunately, the waist usually needs to be taken in an inch or two, which may not be the case if your waist is a little bigger.

Just picked up my first SM 40R Contemporary a couple months ago and have worn it a handful of times, seems to fit well and the tailor I took it to seemed pretty impressed by the fit. For perspective, I'm just under 5'10" and ~170lbs, and I wear a 39R in BB's Regent fit and a 40R in the Fitzgerald (RIP). Both of those are noted as having 18.25" shoulder measurements, so I'm wondering if the 40R SM would feel small for you? The SM team was great helping me figure out which size to order, so might be worth talking it through with them (or get both the 40 and 42 and use the free return, assuming it's your first jacket order with them).“There are moments, Jeeves, when one asks oneself, 'Do trousers matter?'"
"The mood will pass, sir.”

lax101 Sideswipe Thank you both. Could I trouble you to measure your 40R jackets using the method of measurement linked in the video below? I measure in at about a 19" or so, but I am curious to see what you guys come up with on your jackets, specifically if that's the measurement listed on the Spier & Mackay website. Thanks!

SpierMackay -- The new merchandise looks great. I have two questions:
1) Reading posts on styleforum I got the impression that the new denim shirt has slightly shorter sleeves than the measurements given. Is that true? Is this just denim shrinking as it always does?
2) Also, do the new linen shirts have slightly larger dimensions (e.g., longer sleeves)? My linen shirt from last year is a little bigger than my cotton shirts in the same size. I'm just wondering if that has changed.

The denim is washed so the majority of the shrinkage is already removed. 1/2" is standard. So consider these "pre-shrunk".
