I mean the micro-creases you get where calf flexes. These eventually become holes or tears in the leather and keep calf from lasting as long as shell. Shell doesn't get micro-creases, it gets wavy. Those tongues don't look creased, they just look like bad pieces of leather.
Just ordered a pair of McTavish... <psyched>
From Amazon or the AE sale?
I gotta say, these aren't knock-out prices. I picked up a pair of strands the other day locally new for less than they want for seconds. It's cool that they have these sales, but if you're careful you can pick up new AEs for about the same price, sometimes less.
@nicholascrawford and @Jason Carreira,
My point was not that we should be fantastically anal retentive. My point was that the cordovan, on a shoe shipped directly from the factory and never worn, had creases in it. Cordovan AE shoes on eBay are similarly creased. Anyway, I don't care enough about this to get into an argument.
I might jump on this sale. I could use a new pair of shoes.
I just pulled the trigger on Walnut Strands from Amazon with 20% off. Figured the difference in paying a bit more and getting it new vs factory seconds was worth it. My biggest investment since I started rebuilding my wardrobe several months ago.
@JC - AE Sale.
I've trying to get something on eBay tonight... If I get outbid I may jump on this.
Noob question, but what's the difference on Amazon between the Strands in Walnut and the Walnut Calf? Also, how much does AE charge for shipping? I've got Amazon Prime and am wondering if the prices might be a bit closer together if they charge ~10 for shipping.
@Kenneth, I think they are the same...the one sold by Amazon says Walnut Calf and the one sold by Shoebuy on Amazon says Walnut. AE has free shipping.
@Juan - you're a lifesaver. Thanks!
OK - noob question, but can anyone explain to me what lasts are? And what seconds mean? I'm gathering that that just means the shoe is slightly flawed? Thanks!
@BC, all about lasts: http://www.allenedmonds.com/aeonline/AllAboutLastsView?catalogId=40000000001&langId=-1&storeId=1. Seconds have a cosmetic flaw.
@BrownCow: Good question. I was just learning about that last week. Here's a good resource: http://www.allenedmonds.com/aeonline/AllAboutLastsView?langId=&storeId=1&catalogId=40000000001
Basically, the last is the foot template used. It's a good idea to go to a store and try on shoes built on different lasts and make notes on how they fit. Even writing notes in a notebook! When you see a sale online, you can refer back to a shoe made with the same last and decide if the B/C/D/etc. size would fit you best since they all have differences. A last that fits you perfectly would help you find other shoes on the same last that you might like.
Factory seconds are discontinued models or shoes with cosmetic discrepancies that prevent them from being sold retail.
^what Juan said 26 seconds ago. =)
@BrownCow: Think of lasts as molds for shoes. Not all shoes of the same size have the same shape since they're made from different lasts - even from the same company. Allen Edmonds is known for having a wide variety of lasts to make sure you can find a shoe that's a good fit. And if you fit a shoe of a particular last, its a safe bet that you'll fit ANY other shoe made from the same last.
Lol I'm too slow.
@Alan:
I have 5 pairs of shoes in the #5 AE last. I have to admit that none of them fit the same way. So much so that if you're picky, you might have problems with fit from one pair to the other. The length is generally uniform, but I'd say by fit, some pairs have seem to be quite wider than others. One pair in particular has a much higher instep than the others as well.
Park Avenues, here I come ! Well, if there's any left in my size and color. And if I can get the courage to call. My spoken English is beyond terrible, so I'm really nervous.
There's no other way to order other than by phone, right ?
@Jessy - if it really disturbs you, there's always Amazon to compare prices to. You'll likely pay a bit more, but it's firsts and not seconds, and it's computerized.
@Kenneth Since Not sure Amazon will ship to Canada, I'll take a look. I wanted to request USPS as the carrier to save on brokerage, not sure I'll be able with Amazon.
@Jessy, French is your language? I'm sure your English is better than their French. That's how I always try to look at it when I get nervous about conversing in Spanish.
@greg_s, yes, I speak French. One time I had to order a pair of Sebago boots from Last Call by phone, it was really hard.
@Kenneth Park Avenue is showing $319.99 plus shipping, which is a bit high.
@Jessy - I would have never guessed based on your written English! If you post the size you want, I'll call and ask them about shipping too.
@nicholascrawford Hey, thanks ! My written English isn't so bad, but I write and read in English every day. I get to speak in English about twice a year, so I'm a bit rusty.
That would be really kind of you if you could call for me.
I'm looking for Park Avenue oxfords in black, size 6.5D. Not sure if the 5 last is right for me, but I'll give it a try. I can settle for something similar (Hale, Fifth Avenue, etc), but PA is preferred.
Ask if they can ship to Trois-Rivieres, QC, Canada, with USPS. Might be a bit more expensive, but if I can save on duties, might be worth it.
If you could ask for returns, that would be great. Oh and since they're seconds, could you ask to describe what was wrong with the shoes?
Thanks a lot.
@Jessy, don't forget that they take 20% off at checkout due to their current Valentine's Day sale. so that $320 is really $256.
Jessy - they do have the black Park Avenue in a 6.5D at their Brookfield, WI store. I'll call over there next to see if they can get their hands on it. The guy at the main location in Port Washington said most black shoes that are seconds have blemishes on the heel or sole. The price is $209 plus shipping - I'll ask the Brookfield store about the shipping...brb.
@Kenneth I don't see any discount. They're even asking a $108.61 "Import Fees Deposit", so I get an order total of $438.82. Maybe the discount isn't available outside USA?
@Jessy - could be. Sorry! Right inconvenient, that.
