AnonymousJay - I'm just not impressed enough with the M&S suit to risk buying overseas. There are other solutions like Indochino to get an especially slim suit that's long enough...and in a wide range of fabrics in case you do end up liking how Indochino serves you. With M&S, that's the only option. If you do try it, I would be very curious to know how it looks!

----

Just to chronicle this. Bruschetta commented elsewhere that the Express Small Talls were too long in the sleeves. I tend to agree, but they are barely too long. The regular Express Smalls actually fit pretty well in the sleeves without being too long (they're 33.5", oddly enough).

For additional reference:

https://foursquare.com/bullmeister/checkin/4fb04d37e4b0efef5f521f4f

So I tried the regular Smalls, and the body length immediately annoyed me. They're fine to wear untucked, but if I tuck them in, they are so short, they work their way out quickly. I'll experiment some more, but I need to exchange something else at Express anyways, so the regular Small shirts may go back.

frost - We must've posted at the same time, but I agree with what you're saying. I still tend to buy striped shirts because they're on sale instead of solid white shirts that I really should focus on.

Chareth - I'm an extreme ectomorph. I can't gain weight for the life of me, even as I turn 30 this summer. But I chucked the suits that I bought years ago anyways! One was boxy and the other was a synthetic. Your second point is solid too. I bristle when I hear folks say they need this and that. Ultimately these are wants. You won't some day have a full wardrobe that suits you for life. It's a lifestyle, a journey, a diversion. It's fun.

One note.. The peacoat / trench i bought at BR today fits me perectly on the shoulders, however, the sleeves are a little longer to show any shirt sleeve (like the model here does).. Is that OK or does it need to be remedied somehow?

I just got my small LEC Heritage Oxford shirt (in S). It is probably the slimmest fitting shirt I have. So that's probably a good thing, though I'm still not used to slim fits. I'm a 15.5"x34" (though I think my sleeve length may have gotten shorter in the past few months...). It's a bit tighter than it should be if I button the top button, but it's not impossible. I have a slim body (30" waist), and it seems to fit just right there.

As for the shirt itself, it's hard to tell. I wish they didn't try to package it so rumpled. I'll definitely have to iron it out before wearing.

This might be a quickie. I have a Black Pinstripe suit sitting in my closet. It's tailored to fit me and I don't wear it because I don't really know how to anymore. Especially since in the last year my style has changed.

I don't want to let it go to waste. So does anyone have any tips?

Thanks

I got the nailhead last year for $20.

Basically flushed that $20 down the toilet. Horrible fit. I ordered a large and was absolutely swimming in it. Very unflattering cut. I'd definitely recommend sizing down 1-2 sizes.

This is one of the many aspects of going to an extremely traditional church that I like. I wear a tie almost every Sunday and sometimes a blazer. Most men wear suits on the greater feasts like Christmas. I wore cufflinks and a pocket square on Easter and no one thought anything of it because I was not the only one.

As an aside, I got to go to a senior ball last weekend that had around 7000 people in attendance. Well over half the men were wearing tuxedos and the rest were in dark suits. It was pretty cool, though some of them needed to go back to the basics of black tie. I saw one hipster guy wearing a plaid vest under his dinner jacket.

Hey everyone. I posted a few weeks ago about a negative experience I had purchasing an Orient watch from Amazon.com. To summarize, Amazon.com shipped me a watch that had a coating of dirt on it. The watch case was also dented and dirty.

I sent an email to Joe at Orient Watch USA to describe what had happened, and he followed up with Amazon.com. I then ordered the watch directly through Orient Watch USA.

Joe at Orient Watch USA sent me a personal email shortly after I placed the order. He said that he was glad to have the opportunity to make me a happy customer, and that he'd personally check the watch and ship it out of his office tomorrow.

The watch that I ordered was the Orient Cosmos with a white face and blue hands. I'm planning on replacing the steel bracelet with a dark leather alligator watch band.

I'm posting this because it's rare that I receive such good customer service from an American company. They deserve a little press for going out of their way to satisfy a customer.

I'd like to add one more thing I know I've said here before.

If you're under 25 -- arbitrary, I know -- I'd stay away from expensive, fitted, tailored clothes (like suits). Unless you're an extreme ectomorph, you're very likely to gain fat and/or muscle as you age, depending on your lifestyle, and it's very likely your expensive suit will no longer fit. People that don't grow larger with age are the exception, not the rule.

Also, one empty platitude that many people like to repeat is that "a suit is an investment". It's not. It's an expense for an asset that you should using and depreciating. Don't buy an expensive suit at 23 and expect to wear it once a year for the next 20 years. Very likely, one of two things will happen. Either the suit will no longer fit you, or it will simply be out of style within a few short years.

Given the fact there was much discussion of the LEC Smalls here, I wanted to report that I got mine in today and they continue to fit just about as snugly as an off the rack shirt can. The sleeves do measure about 34 3/4" as reported. The shoulders are pretty narrow, so somehow the sleeves fit maybe a 1/4" short or so (I usually take a 34" sleeve). Still, I'm very pleased.

These aren't your see-through poplin shirts. They are a thicker, heavier fabric you would more associate with a casual shirt. Still, with the small check gingham I got, I can press it and wear it to work (as mentioned here).

Anyway, I think I've learned that I should size down to a small in just about ever LEC shirt purchase.

Very pleased with my LEC Heritage Mini Gingham Poplin Shirt in Garnet Gingham (phew, that's a mouthful). LEC smalls are just about a perfect off the rack slim fit for my 6'0 175 lb frame (15.5" x 34"). The sleeves could be 1/4" longer or so, but it's not so bad in a casual shirt. I just ironed it and it shaped up pretty well. While it's fate might be as a casual shirt, I'll wear it into my business casual workplace tomorrow, no problem.

Very pleased with this as a $20 purchase (with last week's sale and discount code).

"I would ask for length measurements if you try a size down. If a smaller size is shorter, NC is correct that you may need a long."

That's an interesting observation that I never considered. For me, shorts have always been too short and longs have always been too long. Guess that means I'm just...average.

I ended up my local BR store to check out the sizing on the linen blazer Joe featured this morning and I was looking around the store. I was surprised to see the Lightweight Peacoat for $69.99 and I picked it up impulsively. I was looking for a trench coat / jacket anyways. It's a little heavy but I could make it work in the New England Fall / Winters.

http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=32658&vid=1&pid=429749

It'd have been 90$ after discount if I'd gotten it online.

You hit it on the spot -- it's his wedding. Sounds like you offered some input earlier, but he didn't take it. You shouldn't bring any of it up again.

That being said, a tailor will be able to bring in the coat, and probably slim down the sleeves and pant legs if you so desire. Probably won't be perfect (few non-MTM/bespoke suits are), but it'll get you a lot closer and it'll likely look much better than the other groomsmen who don't get theirs tailored.

However, hopefully you won't upstage the groom. Is he going to wear the same suit? Or a different suit? Maybe you offer / reco that he should come with you to get your suits tailored together (you get his tailoring costs as a gift?) and that way you'll both look good on his big day.

@Tat: Damn, that's a lot of shoes. That's a pair for every day of the month (and then some). I think you've got more shoes than my wife. :-)

Slimmer. The armholes don't look great to me either. Although I know there's nothing a tailor can do with that.

I haven't purchased a suit since I've begun upgrading my wadrobe, I probably would have gone The Alfani Red or Tommy Hilfiger route if I was making my own selection.

I'd rather be slightly unsatisfied than raise hell over his suit selection as it's his wedding after all.

So I finally returned the 2 pairs that didn't fit well. It was easy at my local store. Kept the Bayfields and Hales. All is right in the universe again.

for those of you with j crew chinos - I recently went
to try on a few pairs and really like the urban slims.

Out of their chino options would you consider them
to be more casual as opposed to dressier?
- i'm looking to for a pair of casual chino as well
as chinos that could fit a business casual setting.
- would the urban slims work to be dressed up or down?
- any other recommendations?
